Memorial Day Activities
April 23, 2014

[Letter from Superintendent of Schools - Paul J. Saxton]

Memorial Day parades have been a tradition in cities and towns across America for well over a century. However, today the number of those parades is dwindling. The Mayor and Council, the Fort Lee Board of Education and a group of local residents are working hard to keep the “hometown” tradition alive to honor borough residents who served in the armed forces and recognize the brave men and women who died protecting our freedoms. The Parade Group is hoping residents will line the streets on May 26 starting at 10:00 a.m. to make our heroes feel appreciated. Additionally, the team, with strong contributions from juniors, Theo Han and Phil Plucinski plus freshmen David Grant, placed 8th overall in a field of 46 teams at the same State Tournament.  Other accomplishments included winning the American Division for a second consecutive year, posting a 13 win 2 loss match record this season, a 27 win 3 loss match record over the past two seasons, and placing 6th in the Bergen County Bowling Tournament, the highest finish for a Fort Lee bowling team in the County Tournament.  Coach Rich Bello attributes the teams success to hard work during the off season, teammates belief and respect for each other and their ability to bowl well in pressure situations.
Congratulations to Coach Ziemba & DaShaun Washington!
March 3, 2014

On February 15th 2014 the Bridgemen Boy's Basketball team defeated Palisades Park 46-31.  This win gave head Coach John Ziemba his 300th career win at Fort Lee High School.  Coach Ziemba has been a coach at Fort Lee for over 20 years and his 300th win for the Bridgemen improved his career record to 333-313, winning his first 33 games a Passaic Valley High School. On February 20th 2014 senior guard DaShaun Washington scored his 1,000th career point for the Bridgemen Boy's Basketball Team against Pascack Hills.  Heading into this season DaShaun had scored 573 in his 3 years for the Bridgemen.  So far this season he has scored 520 points, tripling his career average and leading the league in scoring by averaging 20.8ppg.  His 520 points this season is the most in the league and the 4th highest in all of Bergen County.  His 20.8 average ranks 5th in in the county.

ALL PARENTS WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NEW JERSEY SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY
January 6, 2014

Fort Lee Public Schools would like to use the NJ School Climate Survey to collect data that will help us to evaluate our strengths and to identify areas for improvement. It is a multi-faceted process that gathers information from parents, staff, and students. We need your assistance in this effort. Your views in this area will provide critical information because of your experiences and perspective on this topic. As a parent, you are witness to a side of your child’s life when dealing with peers and their feelings about going to school.   The survey is anonymous and will only take a few minutes of your time.

If you have children at different academic levels, we would appreciate your input for each school you have experience with if your prospective is different and it would prompt you to respond differently.

We hope you will stop for a moment and participate in this extremely important endeavor. The survey is linked below for your convenience:

School Play: The Survivor - November 21st to 23rd
November 18, 2013

Fort Lee High School’s Thespian Troupe 3103 cordially invites you to attend our play The Survivor on November 21, 22 or 23 at 7:30. Your presence at this event is truly welcomed and appreciated. Tour students have worked tirelessly to bring this moving portrait of The Holocaust to our stage. It has been a long while since Fort Lee has performed a drama and this is a good one. The Survivor is a play by Susan Nanus, based on the Memoirs of Jack Eisner. This gripping drama takes place in the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. A group of determined teenagers organize to resist the Nazis. They begin by smuggling food into the ghetto. Eventually they form the nucleus of the Warsaw uprising. These heroic young people make a pact: if anyone survives their dreadful ordeal, he or she will tell the story of what happened to them. There was only one survivor and this is the story he told. The students playing these amazing characters are among the most talented actors Fort Lee has ever seen. The entire piece is student-driven and is a labor of love for all of those who have ever suffered and who are still suffering the atrocities of war. On behalf of Fort Lee High School’s Theatre Department I thank you for your continued support of our program and the arts. Respectfully, Jodi Etra. [More Information]

June 26, 2013

As we close the 2012-2013 school year, we’d like to remind all Fort Lee's parents that summer is a perfect opportunity for children to enjoy reading books of their choice without the pressures of daily homework assignments and tests.  Fort Lee Public Schools would like to share their 2013 Summer Reading Parent Resource Packet (see attached) which includes a variety of websites that offer wonderful summer learning activities and book lists.  These booklists represent a variety of topics and genres to satisfy each child’s reading interests.  With your guidance, children can select books they have a strong desire to read.  Children should document all books read on the Summer Reading Log found in Summer Reading Resource Packet and return it to school by Monday, September 16th for a special Summer Reading Certificate.  We wish you and your children a wonderful summer break and Happy Reading!

The Alliance for Young Writers, sponsor of the oldest and most prestigious writing awards competition in the country, recently awarded a Silver Key and an Honorable Mention to two Fort Lee High School students. Junior Joy Chen, who won a Gold Key last year for her memoir, challenged herself with short story writing this year and earned one of the Silver Key awards. “South of Peking,” is reminiscent of Chinese author Amy Tan’s stories about the clash between traditional values and assimilation into American culture.   She is looking forward to next year’s competition and the ultimate goal of senior creative writers: to enter a diverse portfolio of her best work completed over four years. Senior Tiffany Zhu’s three unique works: two prose poems “Road Kill” and “Run” and her free verse poem “Undying” earned the Honorable Mention.

Dear Members of the Fort Lee School Community
December 15, 2012

December 15, 2012

Dear Members of the Fort Lee School Community,

In light of recent events in Newtown, Connecticut, I am certain that you share my deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the members of the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. This is a harsh reminder of our vulnerability and a reminder that we must remain vigilant in safeguarding our children and staff.

I would like to assure you that we are doing everything possible to secure our buildings and protect our children. The Fort Lee Police Department will deploy police officers to patrol both outside and inside our buildings in the coming days. In addition, the building principals will review safety procedures with all staff and students.

I would like to ask our parents and guardians to assist us as well. All visitors must enter through the main entrance and check in at the main office. Please cooperate as you may be denied entry if you do not present identification. We welcome our parents and guardians to participate in scheduled meetings and events; however we have an ongoing flow of visitors delivering forgotten items such as instruments and books. Only enter the building if absolutely necessary or if you have to conduct school business. We would like to limit the number of unnecessary visitations inside our buildings. Any visitors who are neither parents nor guardians must request a visit in writing.  Your cooperation is very much appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your building principal or me directly.

Sincerely,
Sharon Amato, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent of Schools

ATTENTION ALL
December 14, 2012

In light of the shooting that has occurred at a school in Newton, CT today we would like all parents/guardians to be aware that the Fort Lee Police Department will have increased police presence with additional police cars as well as unmarked vehicles at all schools during dismissal. An announcement has been made at all schools for students to go directly home after dismissal.
Please note that all efforts are being made to ensure the safety of all our students in the Fort Lee Public Schools.
If you have additional questions or concerns please contact your building principal.

Summer Reading Resources
June 18, 2012

As we close the 2011-2012 school year, we’d like to remind you that the summer season is a perfect opportunity for children to enjoy reading books of their choice without the pressures of daily homework assignments and tests. With the assistance of the Fort Lee Public Library, we composed book lists representing a variety of topics and genres to satisfy each child’s reading interests. With your guidance, children can select books they have a strong desire to read. Students entering grades K-8 should document all books read on the Summer Reading Log and return it to school by Wednesday, September 12th for a special certificate. While this is NOT a required assignment, we hope your children will participate. All summer reading resources are available on our district website and your child will receive a Summer Reading Parent Resource Packet to take home. We wish you and your children a wonderful summer break and Happy Reading!

A Message from the Fort Lee Police Department
October 26, 2012

Over the last couple of weeks, there have been several reported incidents of suspect luring in surrounding Bergen County towns. It must be noted these incidents appear not to be all similar. There are different descriptions of both the actors and the vehicles they used. This is not to downplay the possible seriousness of the topic, but rather to get reliable information to the public. These reported luring incidents may or may not be associated. It is very possible that some incidents were legitimate requests for assistance. I ask that all of us be aware of these incidents and take the appropriate actions if there is any suspicious incidents. [More Information]

Fort Lee Public Schools 2012-2013 School Calendar Survey
April 18, 2012

Due to the construction calendar for the summer of 2012, we must start school as late as possible to allow for completion of the approved projects. As such, we must shorten one of the breaks historically included in the annual school calendar. The 2012-2013 school calendar approved on Monday, April 16, 2012 includes shortening the February break. This was designed to allow for appropriately spaced breaks throughout the year.

As a courtesy, the Board of Education conducted a poll of stakeholders to make certain that the decision was in agreement with the feelings of the school community. As such, a short survey was posted on this site, and we received 507 responses. Overwhelmingly, 76% (384) of all responses indicated an agreement with the shortening of the February break in 2012-2013 as originally planned. Therefore, no changes to the break schedule shall be made at this time. Thank you to everyone who responded; we appreciate your feedback.
