In light of recent events in Newtown, Connecticut, I am certain that you share my deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the members of the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. This is a harsh reminder of our vulnerability and a reminder that we must remain vigilant in safeguarding our children and staff.
 
I would like to assure you that we are doing everything possible to secure our buildings and protect our children. The Fort Lee Police Department will deploy police officers to patrol both outside and inside our buildings in the coming days. In addition, the building principals will review safety procedures with all staff and students.
 
I would like to ask our parents and guardians to assist us as well. All visitors must enter through the main entrance and check in at the main office. Please cooperate as you may be denied entry if you do not present identification. We welcome our parents and guardians to participate in scheduled meetings and events; however we have an ongoing flow of visitors delivering forgotten items such as instruments and books. Only enter the building if absolutely necessary or if you have to conduct school business. We would like to limit the number of unnecessary visitations inside our buildings. Any visitors who are neither parents nor guardians must request a visit in writing.  Your cooperation is very much appreciated. Due to the construction calendar for the summer of 2012, we must start school as late as possible to allow for completion of the approved projects. As such, we must shorten one of the breaks historically included in the annual school calendar. The 2012-2013 school calendar approved on Monday, April 16, 2012 includes shortening the February break. This was designed to allow for appropriately spaced breaks throughout the year.

As a courtesy, the Board of Education conducted a poll of stakeholders to make certain that the decision was in agreement with the feelings of the school community. As such, a short survey was posted on this site, and we received 507 responses. Overwhelmingly, 76% (384) of all responses indicated an agreement with the shortening of the February break in 2012-2013 as originally planned. Therefore, no changes to the break schedule shall be made at this time. Thank you to everyone who responded; we appreciate your feedback.

 The Greater Fort Lee Chamber of Commerce (GFLCC) is hosting a Basketball Fundraising event for the Academy of Finance on Saturday, March 19, 2011, in the high school gym.  (Please enter through gym door.) Basketball competitions (teams of 3-5 people) will take place 10 a.m. thorugh 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded.  The event is sponsored by Southpole-USA of Fort Lee.  Many Fort Lee Chamber members are providing food donations. This is a free, family event.

The New York Mets have donated 4 field level tickets (plus one parking pass) to the SADD organization at Fort Lee School No. 1. As a fundraiser, SADD will have a raffle for the tickets and pass (valued at approximately $800).
