03-27-20 - COVID-19

UPDATE 03-27-2020 ON COVID-19

March 27, 2020

Good Morning  Fort Lee Families,

Happy Friday. We have completed almost 2 weeks now and you’re doing great. Take the weekend to rejuvenate so we can maintain the energy next week.

Some important information from Governor Murphy below:

During his daily press briefing yesterday, the Governor stated that “the decision to reopen schools lies squarely with him. He does not intend to assess the reopening of schools until April 17, 2020, at the earliest.” As Governor Murphy stated, “the decision to reopen will be based on careful discussion with our public health and safety experts, and with our educators and districts, and will be guided by the facts on the ground.”

Now it’s official. The Fort Lee schools will be closed next week (3/30 - 4/3) and the following week (4/6 - 4/9). Beginning on Friday, April 10, the schools will be on spring break, as scheduled. The spring break will be a school recess. There will not be any instruction or assignments during the break. Spring break ends on Friday, April 17.

As we all know, COVID-19 is impacting Fort Lee and all of Bergen County. If a staff member or student is confirmed to have the virus, the local health department will investigate and determine who needs to be notified. As we move further away from March 13th, our last regular school day, the nexus to school attendance with the virus becomes  less important. If you hear about someone or have someone sick in your family, please understand that you will be notified by the Health Department if they feel there is a public health issue that makes contact necessary. The Health department staff is doing an amazing job under very challenging circumstances.

The district administration continues to meet virtually with the teachers and each other.  The online instruction process is an ongoing, fluid learning process for all involved. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher and/or building principal.

REMINDER:  Practice social distancing. It is proven that it will work to lessen the spread of COVID-19.  Please remind your children that the closures and social distancing measures are in place to protect everyone, and it is vital that everyone adhere to the restrictions issued.

Suggestion for the weekend: Take a trip, virtually of course, to one of the areas zoos or aquariums. They are offering a variety of programs and online activities. Today’s Bergen Record has a list of several in the “Weekend” section. My game suggestion is an all-time classic, Twister. Nothing like getting tangled up with your kids for entertainment.

Don’t forget to support the local merchants, if possible. They provide so much support for us during the school year.  Order some take out food if you can. It’s a great excuse for not cooking.

Reminder: Sign up for the municipal alerts through the nixle alert notice system at nixle.com or by texting 07024 to 888777. Mayor Sokolich and his team are doing a great job of keeping all of us informed.

Don’t forget the census: Fill out the Census online at https://my2020census.gov/  or you can respond by phone at 844-330-2020.

Thank you for your ongoing efforts and cooperation.  We will get through this,  TOGETHER.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Rota

Superintendent of Schools
